How tax attorneys and tax resolution firms get more qualified cases

May 15, 2026·6 min·James Coyne

Tax resolution marketing has a terrible reputation — and largely deserved. Decades of scammy TV ads promising to settle tax debts "for pennies on the dollar" have made consumers deeply skeptical. The firms that win long-term are the ones that look nothing like the bad actors.

Why aggressive tax resolution marketing fails now

Consumers now know the pattern: the 800-number, the urgency script, the upfront fee taken for work never completed, the case handled by a non-attorney "enrolled agent" who never returns calls. Any firm that markets like this is being actively screened out by better-informed prospects.

Meanwhile, genuine tax attorneys willing to position as real lawyers doing real tax work are underserving actual demand.

The Coyne Labs tax resolution playbook

Pillar 1 — Real attorney-centered positioning

Lead with the attorney. Training (usually a tax LLM or equivalent specialization). Bar admissions. Prior experience (often IRS, Department of Justice Tax Division, or accounting firm tax practice). Published articles and CLE presentations.

This positioning alone separates serious firms from the boiler room shops that dominate the category.

Pillar 2 — Issue-specific content libraries

Tax clients have very specific problems. Content libraries should address each:

  • IRS audit defense
  • State tax audit defense
  • Tax appeals
  • Offers in compromise
  • Installment agreements
  • Currently not collectible status
  • Innocent spouse relief
  • Trust fund recovery penalty
  • Tax fraud defense
  • International reporting issues (FBAR, FATCA)
  • State residency and tax domicile issues
  • Cryptocurrency tax issues
  • Employment tax disputes

Each issue has patients searching specific questions with high purchase intent.

Pillar 3 — Honest expectation setting

Not every tax case gets settled for pennies on the dollar. Content that honestly explains what can and cannot be negotiated, what the IRS process actually looks like, and what realistic outcomes are sets firms apart from scammers.

Pillar 4 — Fee transparency (where possible)

Many tax resolution cases cannot be priced flat upfront. But firms can publish fee structures for common services (audit representation, appeals preparation, offer in compromise preparation) and transparent hourly ranges. Clients who have been burned by scammers value this transparency disproportionately.

Pillar 5 — Review architecture emphasizing credentials and results

Tax resolution reviews often focus on the emotional relief of problems solved, not on specific results. Cultivating reviews that mention specific resolution types ("settled my case without bankruptcy," "audit outcome was better than expected") builds specific, credible social proof.

Pillar 6 — CPA and accountant referral cultivation

Tax attorneys get a significant portion of cases from CPA and accountant referrals — when a client has a problem beyond what the accountant can handle. Systematic relationship-building with local CPAs and content designed for CPA sharing drives durable referral flow.

Pillar 7 — Geographic specialization

Tax attorneys who focus on specific state tax issues (Florida residency claims, specific state sales tax issues, state-specific appeals procedures) build defensible specialty positioning that less focused firms cannot match.

What to avoid

  • Urgency language around tax deadlines (reads as scammy)
  • "Pennies on the dollar" claims
  • Vague "tax relief" positioning
  • Marketing that hides the actual attorney behind the firm

The result pattern

A Florida tax resolution law firm we worked with repositioned away from generic tax-relief marketing toward genuine attorney-led content around specific issue types. New-case volume grew 60% over 13 months. Case complexity and value grew faster — the firm attracted clients with more complex, higher-fee cases because the positioning signaled sophistication.
