Why Coyne Labs does not take one-off projects
Coyne Labs is a retainer-only firm. We do not take one-off website builds, one-off SEO audits, one-off content projects, or any other project-based engagements. Here is the reasoning, and what to do if a one-off project is what you actually need.
Why we do not take one-off projects
1. One-off marketing projects mostly fail. A website built and handed off without ongoing optimization decays within 6-12 months. An SEO audit without execution sits in a PDF forever. A content project without continued publication rarely ranks. The outputs of one-off projects almost never produce the outcomes clients expected when they commissioned them.
2. The business case does not work. Our engagement model is built around 12-36 month value creation. A one-off project at the pricing it would command does not pay for the senior attention required to deliver it well, and we will not deliver poorly.
3. It would dilute the retainer clients. Every one-off project consumes team capacity that is supposed to serve the 40 retained clients. We would be choosing between serving existing clients well and serving new one-off clients. That tradeoff has an obvious answer.
4. The client usually does not win either. A client who gets a one-off website from us and then handles everything themselves will not get the outcome they wanted. We would rather not start the relationship that way.
What happens if you ask for a one-off
We will politely decline and refer you to one of two places:
- —A recommended project-based agency or freelancer that handles one-off work at quality (we maintain a small list of trusted referrals)
- —A recommendation to start with a retainer engagement if the work is actually material enough to warrant one
We will not try to talk you into a retainer you do not need. If the one-off is genuinely a one-off (a single landing page, a specific technical audit, a one-time rewrite of copy), we will point you somewhere appropriate.
Where the line is
We will take on engagements that look one-off-ish but are actually retainer-compatible:
- —A new client build that includes ongoing management from month 0
- —A rescue engagement where we take over a broken situation and commit to the retainer for at least 12 months going forward
- —A site migration + rebuild + retainer
- —A retainer engagement that happens to include a specific project in month 1 (new website, new service launch, major content push)
The common thread: something with ongoing value and ongoing accountability.
Why this matters for fit
Clients who are looking for a one-off solution are usually not a fit for Coyne Labs' model. That is fine. Not every firm is a fit for every client. But it is worth knowing up front.
Clients who want a long-term marketing partner — an infrastructure build with ongoing management, compounding results, and accountability — are the fit.
What to do from here
If you want a retainer engagement, book a call. If you want a one-off project, tell us in the booking note and we will refer you somewhere appropriate. Either way, we will be honest about fit.
